Gunpowder
was brought to Italy by Macro Polo in 1292 from the Orient. Later on in the
15th century the Italians began working on the gunpowder to make it into an art
form. They created fireworks and aerial shells that were propelled into the
sky.
In
China, gunpowder was used in warfare as fire arrows. “They were very
effective against soldiers on horseback.”(Bennett, 2008) Arabs acquired
knowledge of gunpowder in the 13th century from India, although it originated
from China. They created the first cannon in history and it was used
against the Mongols in the battle. It is believed from an old text that Arabs
used handheld cannons/guns in the battle of Ain Jalut against the Mongols, and
it is considered the very first kind of portable firearm.
Later on in the 17th century, came the era of gunpowder warfare, when people started using artillery and handguns in wars. They were the weapons of choice for this new era, but gunpowder based weapons were limited, until they became universal in the early modern era, which led to the beginning of increased production (Lavoisier, 2012)
